Patrick Rubinstein
Patrick Rubinstein is a French artist born in 1960. He currently works and lives in Paris. When he was about 15, he wanted to buy a Vespa scooter. With this goal in mind, he told his father who told him that he needed to earn the money to do so and gave him a task: to go and photograph their neighbors’ kids, a brother and sister, each one facing a opposite directions.
Once the photos were developed, his father showed him how to cut them up and place the strips onto the pyramids so that from one angle, the viewer would see one picture and from the other angle the other picture would appear. Word spread and everyone wanted one and soon enough, he had the money for a Vespa, and the rest is history.
Through an innovative process, Patrick Rubenstein creates three dimensional pieces, allowing the viewer to see multiple works in one. Depending on the piece, two or three different images are revealed to the viewer as they move around the piece. This style is called Op art or Optical art: a genre that plays with our perceptions and experienced a meteoric rise in the 1960s.
Spending so much time in Paris during the 60s and 70s, Patrick Rubenstein has a close connection to fashion icons and the viewer can see different easter eggs and call backs to many of his favorite brands, including Dior, Louis Viton, Channel, and more. He’s created for himself a process that has granted him international recognition.
While Victor Vasarely conceives abstract eye tricks in space by transforming shapes and figures, Patrick Rubinstein reappropriates icons of pop culture, and presents them in different facets.
Patrick Rubenstein’s signature is creating a kinetic universe using multiple influences -- from the Renaissance to Street Art, Pop Art to Surrealism, his creativity knows no bounds and the viewer will see his pieces come alive.
Patrick Rubinstein has worked with Philippe Starck and his works are presented all over the world. In 2013, only five years after selling his first work to Durot, he is ranked 89th in the top 100 of the top-rated French artists and is featured in dozens of galleries across the world.
