Dan Wilson
Dan Wilson an award-winning fine artist grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. A lifelong artist, he received his art degree from Utah Valley University and was taken under the great artist William Whitaker’s wing, who pushed him to improve his skills. He paints and teaches out of his home studio in Lehi, Utah, where he is supported by his beautiful wife and five children.
Using many different techniques, Dan Wilson jumps in and out of thick brush and knife strokes to a gentler classical style. This mix of techniques and the contrast of vibrant and subdued colors directs the viewer’s eye and invokes true emotion.
Dan Wilson says his focus as an artist was initially focused on the disciplines of painting. Shape, value, edge, and color all had to be technically perfect. Everything changed when he spoke with a client who had recently purchased a thoughtful, expressive piece far different than Dan’s norm. The woman, teary eyed, explained how the piece uplifted her family and the overall feeling in the room.
“And then the lightbulb went off.” Dan Wilson says, “I knew from that point on that I only wanted to paint images that would speak to and uplift the viewer, pieces that would remind them of the beauties of life, the reasons for living and for loving existence. Vibrant colors and brush strokes working together with the disciplines of art to create beauty and emotion you can’t achieve any other way.”
While Dan Wilson still strives for technical excellence, he says the questions that guide him have shifted. “What do I want to say? What tools can I use to convey my message? How can I uplift? It is all about the sentiment. The WHY of the painting.”
Dan Wilson has received numerous local and regional awards, including “Best of Show” in 2014-2016 in the Utah State Fair, the Director’s Choice Award in Spring Salon, First Place at the Springville Museum of Art Show, and many more. Dan Wilson is considered one of the leading artist in the country and truly is a master at his craft.
