Tim Sears
Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1983, Tim Sears is a self-taught artist who began painting in 2017 from a rooftop flat in New Delhi, India—where he worked for ten years. He has spent most of his life in Texas and India but now resides in Utah. While in India, he developed an appreciation for the sacredness of friendship, life, and space.
Tim decided to forgo a traditional art education and undertook a classical mentorship, studying privately with Jonathan Hardesty has taken workshops with Josh Clare and Nathan Fowkes, in addition to his personal research. His work quickly gained notice, attracting interest of high-end galleries and collectors around Park City, Utah and the West.
In Tim Sears’s pieces, the viewer experiences the vast and dramatic skies in a somewhat “Texan” sensibility, the Indian sacredness of space, and the natural beauty of the Utah landscape. We understand just how big and open the world is while also viewing only a small section of it.
Preferring to paint big, Iconic subjects on large panels, Tim Sears says, “I’m drawn to subjects that make me feel small. Big skies, big barns, and big mountains—often with few figures—create the sense of a dramatic, enduring stage upon which life briefly flourishes.” He likes placing historic, weathered barns against transcendence and transience, grandeur and fragility, permanence and impermanence. In this sense, he carries forward the spirit of the Hudson River Valley School and the golden age of Dutch landscape painting, updating their style and form for a new era.
While these themes shape his perspective, most of Tim Sears’s paintings emerge from an undefined visual intuition rather than a predetermined concept. “I paint from my gut… deciding what looks good as I go.” This blend of experience, instinct, and artistic vision makes his work compelling, deeply personal, and unlike anything else.
